Fara: Accessible Trails For All

Fara is a smart device designed to make hiking trails more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Using GPS and a 180° camera that captures images every few meters, it creates interactive virtual walkthroughs that allow users to “walk” the entire trail while viewing real-time conditions and hazard alerts, all shared through the app to help users identify potential risks and plan confidently before setting out. Powered by the hiking community, Fara helps ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the outdoors safely and independently.
The Information Gap
Many UK trails are labelled as accessible to all, but in reality this is often not the case. Changing trail conditions, unstable terrain, and unexpected hazards frequently create unsafe situations for users.
The lack of detailed and up-to-date trail information is a key barrier to planning hikes safely and confidently, and prevents people from experiencing nature's restorative mental and physical health benefits.

Digital Experience
The Fara device is carried by hikers and collected in trailhead lockers. It continuously captures images to build virtual trail walkthroughs, and when hazards are encountered, users press a button that updates the app map in real time. The data feeds into an app extension integrated with existing hiking platforms, allowing users to explore full routes remotely, view reported conditions, and plan hikes based on their ability before setting out.
In the app, users can tap anywhere on the trail to browse Live Trails, viewing full-route images along with route details and the time of the most recent capture.

Users can enable trail alert filters to view hazards that other hikers have reported along the route.

The system improves accessibility by providing real-time ground condition data, showing surface types rather than just colour. It also includes a rest area filter highlighting designated rest points and their facilities along the trail.
